About Maldives
The Maldives is a short flight from India and works as a honeymoon, an anniversary trip or a quiet family holiday. Most of the day is spent between the beach, the lagoon and the reef, and the water stays clear almost all year. There is nothing to rush for, which is the whole point of going.
Resorts range from budget guest houses on local islands to water villas on private islands. Snorkelling, diving, sunset fishing and dolphin cruises are the usual activities, and the food on the local islands is worth trying. The resort you pick decides the trip more than anything else, because you stay on one island, so we match the island to your budget, your transfer preference and whether you want a house reef.
We plan the trip around your dates and your group size. Tell us when you want to travel and our team sends you a plan and a quotation. Nothing is booked until you approve it.
Best places to see
- Water villasRooms built over the lagoon with steps straight into the water. Best value on a resort with a good house reef, so you can snorkel from your deck.
- House reef snorkellingThe coral shelf around the island, with reef fish, rays and turtles. Go in the morning when the light is good and the water is calmest.
- Sandbank picnicA bare strip of sand in open water where the resort sets up lunch or breakfast. A short boat ride and the best photographs of the trip.
- Sunset dolphin cruiseA dhoni boat trip out to the channels where spinner dolphins feed in the evening. Around ninety minutes and worth doing once.
- Local island visitA guided walk through a village such as Maafushi or Dhigurah, where you see everyday island life and cheaper cafes.
- Scuba divingManta rays, whale sharks and channel dives depending on the atoll. Beginners can do a try dive with an instructor in the lagoon.
- Male and the fish marketThe capital, with the old Friday Mosque, the fish market and the waterfront. A good half day if your flight timing leaves a gap.
- Underwater and beach diningSeveral resorts run reef view restaurants and private beach dinners, which suit an anniversary or a proposal.
Suggested itinerary
- Day 1 Arrive at Male, speedboat or seaplane transfer to the resort, check in and a free evening on the beach.
- Day 2 House reef snorkelling in the morning, pool and spa in the afternoon, sunset from the jetty.
- Day 3 Sandbank picnic and a dolphin cruise in the evening.
- Day 4 Guided local island visit, or a full day of diving for certified divers.
- Day 5 Free day for kayaking, sunset fishing or simply the beach, with a private dinner in the evening.

Good to know
- Indians get a free visa on arrival for a short tourist stay. You need a confirmed hotel booking and a return ticket, and every traveller must submit the Imuga traveller declaration online in the three days before arrival.
- The currency is the Maldivian rufiyaa, but resorts bill in United States dollars and cards are accepted everywhere. Carry a little cash only for local islands.
- A tourist SIM or eSIM is sold at Male airport. Resorts have wifi, but data helps on boat trips and local islands.
- Local islands are conservative. Bikinis are fine on resort islands but cover up in villages, and alcohol is not served or sold on local islands.
- Transfers run to a timetable. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so late night arrivals may mean a night in Male, and we plan flight times around that.
- Reef shoes and reef safe sunscreen are worth packing, and never stand on coral.
- Vegetarian and Jain meals are available at most resorts when we inform them in advance.
